Chief Engineer

Reports to:

  • The Chief Engineer directly reports to the Port Engineer.

Supervises:

  • The Chief Engineer supervises the Oilers, Engineers, and all mechanical equipment onboard the Ferry.

Description of Duties:

  • The Chief Engineer is a very experienced crewmember onboard managing the Ferry's Engineering Department. 

Oversees the condition and operability of all mechanical equipment onboard the Ferry including the following: main engines, propulsion equipment, auxiliary machinery, all electrical, pneumatic equipment, hydraulic machinery, steering machinery, and all associated components, deck machinery, valves, pipes, and watertight integrity of the ferry.

Maintains compliance with all Quality, Safety, and Environmental Management Systems as outlined in the McAllister Operations Manual.

  • Supervises the procurement, loading of all potable water, ballast water, fuel oil, and lube oil.  The Chief Engineer ensures all liquids are of proper quality and quantity making the proper log entries in the Fuel Transfer Certificate.  

  • Repairs all machinery and equipment onboard the vessel within his capacity and completes the daily engine log each day.  

  • Projects a positive company image and maintains professional, amicable relationships with customers, pilots, terminal personnel and the public at all times.

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Current U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential

  • Must possess a Chief Engineering License 

  • Valid Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC).

  • Must live within reasonable commuting distance of Port Jefferson, NY. 

  • Pass pre-employment drug test.

  • Pass pre-employment physical

 

Physical Requirements:

The physical evaluation guidelines for employment onboard Bridgeport Port Jefferson vessels are based on the United States Coast Guard NAVIC 2-98 “Physical Evaluation guidelines for Merchant Mariner’s Credentials”.

You must have the physical ability to operate heavy machinery. Repair work may involve assignments to work beneath machines and in close quarters. Frequent stooping and bending required

Salary: - Day Rate - $736.41
